TEMPORARY INSTRUCTIONAL PERMIT (TIP)
All students, regardless of age, must apply for and obtain a Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) from a state operated Office of Motor Vehicles prior to taking the final knowledge exam. The TIP may be issued to any individual that is at least 14 years of age. If the student is a minor, the legal parent/guardian must accompany the student to the OMV. FEES
$32.25 basic license fee (plus $6 service fee may also be accessed at certain field offices). Cash and credit cards are acceptable forms of payment. NOTE: All male applicants between the ages of 15 and 26 who are US citizens will automatically be registered with the US Selective Service system upon issuance of any credential by the LA Office of Motor Vehicles.
LEARNER'S PERMIT
Upon successful completion of the 30 hour classroom and 8 hour BTW training, students will be eligible for a learner's permit. The TIP card will be surrendered to the OMV along with proof of successful completion from SteerSafe to obtain the learner's permit. There will NOT be any additional fees to obtain a learner's permit. The learner's permit will authorize the teen student to drive with a licensed parent, guardian, or adult at least 21 years of age or a licensed sibling at least 18 years of age or older.
AGE REQUIREMENTS
Students may enroll in driver's education and take the classroom portion at the age of 14 years and 9 months. However, students may not take the BTW training portion until they reach the age of 15.
Adults who are age 18 or older are required to take a pre-licensing course if they have never had a driver's license. They can either take the full 38 hour course or they may take a 14 hour course that includes 6 hours of classroom and 8 hours of BTW training.
15 Years old--Students age 15 must maintain their learner's permit for a minimum of 180 days and reach the age of 16 to apply for an intermediate license. To obtain an intermediate license the student must pass the Road Skills Test offered by the school.
16 Years old--Students age 16 must maintain their learner's permit for a minimum of 180 days before they can apply for an intermediate driver's license. To obtain an intermediate license the student must pass the Road Skills Test offered by the school.
17 Years old--Students age 17 are eligible for either a learner's permit or a full driver's license. To obtain a full license the student must pass the Road Skills Test offered by the school.
18 Years old--Adult students age 18 and over are eligible for a full driver's license after successfully completing either the 38 hour or 14 hour course and the Road Skills Test.
